Each week Reception and KS1 take part in Forest Schools. We are fortunate to have a great Forest Schools area within our school grounds which includes a fire pit, log towers, seating and an undercover learning area. The children are gaining a lot from the sessions including learning new skills such as whittling (removing bark from a piece of hazel with a potato peeler), using a fire striker to light their own fire and also moving on to use a bow saw, palm drill and bit and brace. The children are certainly rising to the new challenges.
As with all teaching Forest Schools sessions are also linked to the EYFS and National Curriculum and the variety of cross-curricular skills / objectives they are able to cover from a set of sessions is amazing.
