Each week Reception and KS1 take part in Forest Schools. We are fortunate to have a nice wooded area within walking distance from school which you can see in the photos below. The children are gaining a lot from the sessions including learning new skills such as whittling (removing bark from a piece of hazel with a potato peeler), using a fire striker to light their own fire and also moving on to use a bow saw, palm drill and bit and brace. The children are certainly rising to the new challenges.
As with all teaching Forest Schools sessions are also linked to the EYFS and National Curriculum and the variety of cross-curricular skills / objectives they are able to cover from a set of sessions is amazing.
